Random Ramble on Preception and the Beauty of Life

What is the meaning of Life, Love, Passion and Art?? The meaning of these things are whatever you want them to be. Your perception of your experiences molds you into the person you are and shapes your life. However, stop for a few minutes and take the time to see the beauty of this world, from smell of the flowers, the singing of birds, the actually taste of an orange, the touch of a rain drop and the feel of unconditional love. Sit back and realize although your perception is yours, the world may not perceive things the same way you do.

On my travel to and from Cincinnati, I started to really appreciate the airplane; the great minds behind it, and the gift that produced the ideal of this invention (the birds of the sky). We rarely stop to think in our busy lives, how wonderful life is. Here I am thousands of feet in the air, traveling hundreds of miles per hour, over clouds, houses, the earth. Yet I am breathing in recycled air and there are at least 100 individuals sharing the experience with me; we are one group. Some are scared, some are fearless like myself, others are tired, some engage in conversation, while others are listening to music, reading a book and/or on their laptop. You know the most amazing part is that we are all in harmony. No worries of race, religion or political ideas. You can say we let our own perceptions just for a few hours play second fiddle.

Once the plane landed, we all thanked the pilot/crew and said our best wishes to one another. We step off the plane back to our individual worlds of worry and hurry. What is the worry and hurry for? You can only control what is in your hands. If it is in your hands do the best you can with it, once its out its out. The hurrying will cause you to miss life’s treasures, the essence of a conversation, the sound of a song. Slow Down my friends and enjoy what the beauty of life.

Never Be Content My Friends…..

If one says they are not satisfied, society looks at this person as if they are unappreciative and unhappy. To be satisfied is to be content. Content is great when talking about one’s emotionally state. However, being content in one’s life isn’t as great. Improvement is what drives humans, so anything opposite of that(content) would be a detriment to our development.

“Contentment brings stagnation which brings death” -Vid Lamonte’ Buggs Jr.

Those that are into fitness knows that one can never be in shape because once you reach one fitness goal you have to set other fitness goals to maintain or better the shape that you are in. We see this with those that accomplish their goal of gaining or losing weight. Soon as their goal is accomplish they become content and they go back to square one.

Same is true for anyone that works in a professional field. School does not mark the end of your learning which you get a job/start a career; school is just the beginning for those that have jobs/careers. If one does not continue to improve their profession they will soon be replaced.

In order to be successful in any part of your life you must always be in the act of improving. Masters are only Masters because they are students of whatever they are a Master of. Leaders are Leaders because they are servants to others. Change only comes when one seeks to improve a situation or situations. Being content can never produce results. We should be happy and at peace with their accomplishments, however, we should continue to seek ways to become better.

Enjoy life my friends, be happy and at peace but never become Content in your lives.

Burning Out

Last week I felt that I wasn’t my usually self.  If you know me, you know that I am a ball of energy, that is very determined and goal-oriented.  Not so the past few weeks.  I would have to push myself to get out of bed and to focus. The normal events that I looked forward to doing everyday, (working-out, writing, doing yard-work and reading), became chores and I despised the thought of doing them.

At first I thought that I was becoming depressed. But why would I all of a sudden become depressed out of the blue. Was it the fact that am I getting older? No way, age as never been a factor in my life. I still could not place why I was so detached physically, spiritually, mentally and emotionally.  Why was I so tired and unmotivated, no matter how much I slept and how much I tried to motivate myself?

Yet I remember this wasn’t the first time I have felt like this. Three years ago I was so drained that tears started to involuntarily come down my face. I remembered that at the point of time I was doing too much and I ignored the signs that my body, soul and mind was telling me. I then realized that “now” was no different than “then”.  I my friends was burnt/burned out.

How did I get to this point of burning myself out? Well I have been going extremely hard promoting my book and businesses, playing basketball and training and off course enjoying my time with my family.  However, in the midst of all of this I haven’t took a break.

For those that are experiencing being burned out, I am going to share what helped me to get back on track.

First, I had to remember that life is about balance. Once you are at either side of extremes,(all work or all play), you naturally become unfulfilled. Being balanced keeps you leveled and fulfilled.

Next, I had to remember that although we love people and things, we shouldn’t feel guilty when we need a break from them. Taking a small break will value these relationships, people and things even more. Also, I had to use what my editor and friend Marci Wise tells me a lot, “Take time to sit back and enjoy all that you have done”. So that is what I did, I took a week off from business, basketball, working out, reading and writing.  I live by the rule that if something that you love doing becomes a chore and you start despising it, it is time to step away for awhile.

Finally, I had to have “me” time.  “Me” time for me consists of meditating, being in my thoughts, being by myself for awhile, eating bad and being surrounded by nature.  I am ashamed to admit that I hadn’t took part in these things in a long long time. Shame on me.

In the process of “Taking a break for ME time”, I learned a lot about myself, I became more motivated, determined, focused and dedicated; as I missed my daily life and routine.  I looked forward to reading, getting back to the gym, among other things.

Remember it is quite alright to break your routine and have “You” Time.

Have you ever seen an athlete not miss a shot or a pass?

Have you ever seen a face without a blemish?

Have you ever heard of a car or any technology that didn’t break?

Have you ever seen a person not have a bad day nor make any mistakes?

Have you ever seen perfection?

So, how do you expect others to be perfect when you have never seen it?

Our imperfections are the closest thing that we will come to perfection.

Dream..Failure.. Being the Better

Through Adversity comes Prosperity. Failing is only an opportunity to learn and work harder to succeed. Hence, Failing doesn’t really exist. The true goal is to BE BETTER THAN YOUR BEST and BEING BETTER THAN YOU WERE YESTERDAY. Remember that our DREAMS/VISIONS will come into Fruition in the most beautiful light before we know it; because before we were, our dreams existed.

Living The Dream

Wow it has been over a month since I last blogged; My sincere apologies. July was a very productive and introspective month for me and I hope that July was the same for you all.

I finally released, “You Ain’t Hungry Until I’m Starving“, on kindle the first week of July. This was big for me because when I first came had thoughts of releasing a book, I always said I would not release a book via ebook. Well the world is ever changing and so I had to adapt. In order to have success and accomplish your goals one must be willing to change their mindset from time to time.

That same week I found out that, “You AIn’t Hungry Until I’m Starving”, was reviewed and featured in two publications. Anyone that have ever published anything knows that this is a huge blessing. More press means more attention for you and your work. I am proud to say(without bragging) that by the end of July the book has been featured in two more publications.

The second week of July was probably the biggest and more introspective week in the month for me. That week started off by me attending and speaking/reading at an community event. Individuals from different backgrounds were in attendance. This event stressed unity, looking past our differences and lending a helping hand to every community.  With so much negative things taking place in the news it was great to be apart of something so positive. This showed me that the work that I do with in the community is needed.

In the middle of that second week I begun to contemplate retiring from the game of basketball entirely. I can not say where these thoughts came from; I love coaching, training people, training myself and I am in the best shape I have been in my life. Did this thoughts come from finally realizing that I am actually an author, an entrepreneur and that I am now 35? Or did these thoughts come because I am getting comfortable and needing a break from the constant being on the go, day in and day out? Looking back I believe it was all of the above. However, I had a talk with The Most High and it seems that my prayer was answered immediately.

After I prayed I received a text message about playing on a pro team for a pro tournament in New York that weekend. This was last minute, the team was leaving the following day. You know what they say though, “Opportunities do not wait for you to be ready, the most prepared take advantages of the opportunities”.  So many thoughts on my mind, “I haven’t played on that level in a while”, “I don’t know many people on the team” and “I have to leave my baby girl for the first time for 5 days”. I also was very egotistical, they said we would travel from Florida to New York via team bus. “Team Bus! Do you know my resume, I’m above riding on a team bus for that many hours!”

I humbled myself down and realize that this was my chance to be a leader. I am glad that I rode up with the team instead of flying. It give us a chance to bond, debate on different topics and pick each other’s brains. I was able to show them that being over 30 doesn’t mean your career is over. Heck, all of them thought that I was 26 until coach told them after our first game. The trip took me back to my younger years of playing and going to games via team bus(shorter trips). The bond between teammates are formed on trips like that. That trip showed me that I still have a lot to give to the game, as well as I have a lot to take from the game. All Praises to The Most High.

After finishing in 4th place(not bad for guys that never played together), it was back to Florida but only for a few days. In these few days much was accomplished. Two writers(soon to be authors) agreed to allow 4-U-Nique Publishing to help them publish their works.

Next was a trip to see family in Maryland and Virginia. This trip was well needed for many reasons. One reason was, my daughter hasn’t met her family(on both sides) that lives in VA/MD. Second reason was Andrea and I haven’t been home in years and it’s nice to spend time with family. It was nice to be back up North for my daughter’s first birthday; being able to spend it with people that aren’t able to see us often. Also, this trip forced me to take the well needed break that my Mind, Body and Spirit craved.

Thank you all for reflecting back on July with me. I promise to write more blogs. I am going to do my best to write 3 interesting blogs a week.

Inside “You Ain’t Hungry Until I’m Starving” and 4-U-Nique Publishing, LLC

Recently I launched 4-U-Nique Publishing, LLC; as well as releasing the first of four books that I have written, “You Ain’t Hungry Until I’m Starving“. The questions I have received the most about these events are, “How does it feel about releasing your book and Publishing Company” and “Are you excited about your accomplishments ?” Well if you know me I hardly get excited over anything.  My feelings on the accomplishments are I am happy that these resources are finally available for the public. I feel when I accomplish any goal that I have set, I am/was suppose to reach; so I am never surprised, shocked or excited when that goal is achieved. This doesn’t take away the importance of the goal that has been reached at all.

What was the inspiration behind “You Ain’t Hungry Until I’m Starving“?  The book is a collection of writings that I wrote in a time period when I was finding myself. In life we change is the only constant thing. So we by habit change and have to find ourselves continuously throughout our lives. This book was actually written in the time periods of 2007-2010.

What took so long for this book to be released?  I had several Publishing Companies wanting me to sign with them. However, the more I found out about the Publishing/Author business, the more I understood that once you sign a contract with a publisher, they now own the manuscript of your work.  I couldn’t give control to someone/something over what I feel/felt and let them change my writings.  I quickly found out that the resources available for Authors that wanted to self-publish were limited and expensive. From there I created 4-U-Nique Publishing,LLC and wrote/finished 3 other books, while putting the release of  “You Ain’t Hungry Until I’m Starving” on hold.

What are the messages hope to be received in this book? Overall the messages that I hope people will get out of this book are; Being true to One’s self, Never giving up and going after what you want in life no matter what anyone says, Loving yourself and each other, as well as keeping others(all creatures) in mind.

Ultimately I know that each person will get something different from each topic. I have learned a long time ago to allow people have their own experiences. For example in “My Son“, I have had people say I was too hard on my son’s mother. However, that piece is  about a man that wants to be there for his child but for whatever reason he isn’t allowed. Not every man that isn’t in their child’s life is a deadbeat and just walked out.

My Love” people think that is about a women in my life. I wrote that specifically like that so people could relate. In truth that was about the game of basketball.

The only selection in the book that I tell people what to think is “The Writer and The Pen“. When I first wrote this and shared with a small few; they could understand the connection between the writer, pen and brain in the literal sense. In order for the message to be received I told the readers who/what each metaphor was.

Was everything in “You Ain’t Hungry Until I’m Starving” based on first-hand experiences?  In some way or another yes. I realized the more I shared some of my writings people were relating to what I wrote. So in turn I would listen to people more. I would take their experiences, add them with mine and then wrote a piece from that.

What has been the initial reaction of the book?  The reviews of this book has been great thus far. I am realistic though. I know that you cannot please everyone. As much as I would like to please everyone, that isn’t my goal. My goal is to have as many people as possible to read and practice the messages that the book presents. My editor, Marci Wise, gave me the first sign that this book was a good book. I am hard on myself and due to this book being written years ago, I am definitely a better writer. I definitely had low expectations for this book, however, Marci told me it help her make the decision to take a journey that she was in doubt of for a long time.  A few others have told me similar stories. That is what matters most to me.

The messages received is what matters the most. You know people these days try so hard to fit in but being unique and stand outside the box is so much more fun. You accomplish more going on your own path and listening to that voice that is inside you.  This is what I speak on in “Coward“.  It’s so easy to follow the crowd and to hate. That’s the coward’s way out in life. It takes strength to go your own way and having people doubt you and make fun of you for being different. The strongest person in the World is a person that LOVES. Do you really know how challenging it is to Love? Hating something you don’t like or understand or agree with is easy. Loving is a challenging because it takes patience, understanding, looking outside of yourself, past other’s differences and being hurt. Show me a person that loves unconditionally than I will show you a person that can conquer the world.
